The Global Sumud Flotilla has set out with the aim of breaking Israel’s strict blockade, delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, and drawing international attention to the plight of Palestinians. Organizers announced on Friday that the fleet departed from Menorca in the Mediterranean and is now heading toward Tunis.
According to the coordinating coalition, most of the vessels are en route to Tunis, while several others—including two ships undergoing repairs in Barcelona after a storm—will soon join. On September 7, a dozen additional ships are expected to take part in the mission, departing from Catania in Sicily and from Tunisian ports. Organizers have described the initiative as a “powerful and united action” against Israel’s blockade.
The humanitarian effort has received widespread global support. More than a hundred current and former elected officials have signed a joint letter calling for the establishment of a humanitarian corridor to Gaza. Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur for the Palestinian Territories, affirmed that the flotilla’s mission is fully in line with international law.
Italian dockworkers in Genoa have declared that if the flotilla is blocked, they will halt all shipments bound for Israel. Colombian President Gustavo Petro expressed solidarity with the participants, saying, “You have chosen the most difficult and dangerous path. We send you strength for your courageous journey.”
Organizers have urged the United Nations and the international community to guarantee the flotilla’s safe passage, prevent the unlawful detention of its participants, and uphold Palestinians’ right to humanitarian sea routes. They demanded an end to Israel’s blockade, calling it part of an ongoing “genocide” against the Palestinian people.
The Global Sumud Flotilla emphasized that the mission is not financed by any government or corporation, but rather by donations from ordinary families, communities, and grassroots organizations worldwide. Doctors, lawyers, artists, humanitarians, activists, and ordinary citizens have come together under the belief that Palestinians have the right to live with dignity, freedom, and humanity.
Meanwhile, Israel’s military offensive in Gaza has now entered its 700th day. At least 64,200 Palestinians have been killed during this period, while the region stands on the brink of famine.
