Europe and China Should Become Friends, Not Rivals: Wang Yi

Wang Yi, member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and China’s Foreign Minister, met last Saturday in Ljubljana with Slovenia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister.

At a joint press briefing following the meeting, Wang Yi stated that multiple areas of consensus were achieved and discussions were held in a friendly atmosphere. China was among the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Slovenia. China’s diplomatic tradition has always been consistent: treating all countries, large or small, as equals. For more than 30 years, regardless of the changing international landscape, China has maintained continuity and stability in its foreign policy, consistently treating Slovenia as an equal partner, following the principles of friendly cooperation and mutual benefit, and setting an example of coexistence among countries of different sizes and social systems.

Wang Yi also noted that this year marks the 80th anniversary of victory in the global struggle against fascism, in which China played a significant role in achieving the ultimate victory of World War II. In today’s international environment, characterized by instability and continuous conflicts, China and Europe should choose friendship over rivalry and cooperation over confrontation.

He further emphasized that on the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, in response to growing global challenges and gaps in governance, Chinese President Xi Jinping has proposed the “Global Governance Initiative,” aligning with the UN’s call and the aspirations of all countries. China is eager to work with Slovenia and other European nations on this initiative, which will contribute greater stability and a more positive force to the international landscape.
