CMG Editorial: A New Chapter in China’s Market Opening

On February 4, the first major event of 2026 titled “Big Market for All: Export to China” showcased high-quality products from multiple countries, captivating participants from around the globe. Tesla Vice President Thao Lin remarked that this initiative not only signals a positive expansion of China’s high-standard market opening but also offers an unprecedented strategic opportunity for international companies, including Tesla, as highlighted in a China Media Group (CMG) editorial.

The editorial emphasized that as the world’s largest goods trading nation, China has always prioritized the expansion of imports. For 17 consecutive years, China has held the position of the world’s second-largest import market. With the 15th Five-Year Plan being successfully implemented, the growing demand for higher living standards among Chinese consumers has created immense potential for consumption and imports in China’s market.

Many participants consider the “Big Market for All” initiative, launched in the opening year of the 15th Five-Year Plan, as a practical step to open China’s market to the world and promote balanced growth in imports and exports. The program also facilitates more channels for global products to enter the Chinese market, complementing international trade fairs.

Notably, during his recent visit to China, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation for “Export to China”, making the UK the first country to formalize an agreement under this ongoing initiative.

China has continued to open its market to the world in recent years. The tariff has been reduced to 7.3%, a globally competitive level. According to the Ministry of Commerce, over 100 “Big Market for All” events will be held in 2026, inviting countries such as the UK, Kazakhstan, Kenya, and Thailand as part of the annual thematic programs. These efforts aim to bring more high-quality international products directly to Chinese consumers.

The editorial also highlighted that with rising trade protectionism and global uncertainties, the “Big Market for All” initiative serves as a stabilizing force, fostering an open world economy and increasing confidence in international trade.

With the Lunar New Year approaching in just over 10 days, China has transformed from a “major manufacturing country” into a “major consumption nation.” In the new year, opportunities in China’s vast market are expected to continue expanding, with doors to market access opening wider than ever. CMG editorial calls on countries to work shoulder-to-shoulder with China for a shared and prosperous future.
