The tenth anniversary of the Paris Climate Agreement has once again highlighted the urgency of addressing global climate change. In a recent online survey conducted by CGTN in collaboration with Renmin University of China, netizens from 48 countries provided insight into public perceptions of climate challenges and the effectiveness of international responses. With more than 33,000 respondents, the survey revealed a strong consensus on the need for practical action and international cooperation to combat climate change.
A striking 91% of respondents believe that extreme weather events have become more frequent in recent years, while 89.2% see this trend as evidence of the rapid deterioration of the global climate. Around 90% agree that urgent measures are required and that the international community must act collectively to address climate challenges. These findings underscore a widespread recognition that climate change is no longer a distant threat but an immediate reality affecting millions of lives worldwide.
The survey also emphasized the importance of strengthening international cooperation. About 85% of respondents highlighted cross-border collaboration as a key tool for effective global climate governance. At the same time, 75.1% criticized developed countries for insufficient commitment and action, and 86.4% stressed that these nations bear an undeniable historical and moral responsibility for human-induced climate change. Developing countries, particularly those in the Global South, showed a strong willingness to act: 94.6% of respondents expressed readiness to integrate resource conservation and carbon reduction into their daily lives, significantly higher than respondents from developed nations.
China’s role in climate governance received notable recognition. 76.7% of respondents believe that China has effectively controlled greenhouse gas emissions, while 79.9% said the country’s approach provides a practical reference for other nations. Additionally, 75.8% acknowledged China’s firm commitment and sense of responsibility as a leading global power in tackling climate challenges.
These results indicate that citizens worldwide value both practical solutions and strong leadership in addressing climate change. They also highlight the need for developed nations to step up, while countries like China can serve as models for balancing development with environmental responsibility. In an era when climate risks are escalating, public awareness, international collaboration, and effective governance are essential to ensure a sustainable future.
