Tim Davie, BBC Director-General, and Deborah Turness, BBC News Chief Executive, have resigned following claims of serious and systemic bias in reporting on sensitive topics including Gaza, Donald Trump, and transgender rights.
The allegations, raised by Michael Prescott, a former adviser to the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines and Standards Committee, accused the broadcaster of failing to maintain editorial neutrality and deliberately misrepresenting information.
A leaked document published by The Telegraph revealed that in a Panorama documentary, Trump’s statement about the January 6 Capitol riot was edited in a way that changed its context, omitting key phrases. U.S. President Trump’s press secretary, Caroline Leavitt, criticized the BBC as “100% fake news”.
In statements, Davie and Turness accepted responsibility, calling their resignations a difficult decision. The BBC has not confirmed whether a formal apology will follow. Experts say the resignations have sparked widespread debate about journalistic independence and neutrality in British media.
