Bangladesh Elected Vice-Chair of UN Peacebuilding Commission for 2026

Bangladesh has been elected Vice-Chair of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for 2026. The election for the commission’s five-member Bureau was held on Thursday at the UN Headquarters in New York.

During the first session of the PBC’s 20th session, Morocco was elected Chair, while Bangladesh, Germany, Brazil, and Croatia assumed the roles of Vice-Chairs.

The Peacebuilding Commission is an intergovernmental advisory body that provides guidance and support to UN entities to strengthen sustainable peace and post-conflict recovery in countries emerging from crises. The commission is composed of 31 member states, selected from the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, and the UN’s top troop- and fund-contributing nations.

Since its establishment in 2005, Bangladesh has played an active role in the PBC. Previously, Bangladesh served as Chair in 2012 and 2022 and as Vice-Chair in 2013 and 2023.

Bangladesh formally assumed its Vice-Chair role during a brief inaugural ceremony of the 20th PBC session. Representatives of the UN General Assembly President and the Secretary-General’s Chief of Staff attended the event, highlighting the commission’s crucial role in global peacebuilding efforts.

In an official statement, the Bangladesh delegation expressed gratitude to the member states for entrusting the country with this important responsibility. The delegation reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to supporting the UN’s peacebuilding initiatives and advancing the commission’s future work plans.
