ASEAN process for achieving peace, stability and reconciliation in Myanmar

Advisor and Special Envoy to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand for Neighboring Countries Issues, Mr. Dusit Manapan, met Foreign Secretary Ambassador Md. Jashim Uddin at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this morning .

Various issues particularly Rohingya repatriation, the escalating situation in Myanmar, and regional peace and security were discussed at the meeting elaborately.

Foreign Secretary Md. Jashim Uddin appreciated Thailand’s commitment to complement the role of ASEAN process for achieving peace, stability and reconciliation in Myanmar. He emphasized that restoring stability in Myanmar would not only build a conducive environment for the repatriation of the Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs) to their homeland but also maintain regional security, which is crucial for the collective interest of this region. Noting the complexities and frustrations in Rohingya camps, he expressed grave concern over their prolonged stay that poses threats to the host community living in Cox’s Bazar. Foreign Secretary sought support for sustainable solutions of the crisis and stressed upon the role of ASEAN in implementing its Five-Point Consensus.

Advisor and Special Envoy Dusit Manapan reiterated Thailand’s keen interest in bringing peace in Myanmar and resolving the ongoing Rohingya crisis. He highlighted the need for a wide range of consultation on issues including border security and combating transnational crimes.

The two sides also discussed bilateral issues such as promotion of trade, commerce, investment, tourism and connectivity etc.between the two friendly countries.
