Beijing’s Stadium Technology Success Becomes a Blueprint for Milan

The Milan–Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games are set to open on 6 February 2026. Speaking at a press conference on 1 February, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Curti Coventry announced that preparations for the upcoming Games have closely followed the successful experience of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, particularly in the areas of advanced stadium technology and sustainable venue utilization.

Coventry highlighted that one of the most valuable lessons from Beijing 2022 was the application of cutting-edge technology to upgrade stadium construction and operational systems. “This has been extremely helpful for us,” he said.

Citing the transformation of the iconic “Water Cube” into the “Ice Cube”, Coventry emphasized that Beijing 2022 set a global example in the innovative and efficient repurposing of existing Olympic venues. He noted that this principle has already been incorporated into Milan–Cortina’s preparation plans and reaffirmed the IOC’s commitment to continuing this approach in the future.
