Dhaka has once again summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma, expressing deep concern over recent attacks and acts of vandalism targeting Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions in India. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed the development in a press release issued on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the Indian High Commissioner was called in to convey the Bangladesh government’s serious concern over a series of unwarranted and violent incidents at Bangladeshi diplomatic establishments in various Indian cities, including New Delhi and Siliguri. Particular emphasis was placed on the incident that occurred on December 20 outside the Bangladesh High Commission and the residence of the Bangladeshi Ambassador in New Delhi, as well as the vandalism at the Bangladesh Visa Centre in Siliguri on December 22.
The Ministry noted that these incidents have raised grave questions regarding the security of diplomatic missions, describing them as clear violations of international diplomatic norms and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. It also strongly condemned violent protests and attacks reported in front of other Bangladeshi missions across different parts of India.
The Bangladesh government expressed its expectation that, as the host country, the Government of India will take necessary and effective measures to ensure the safety and security of Bangladeshi diplomatic premises and personnel. It further urged Indian authorities to take appropriate legal action against those responsible and to prevent any recurrence of such incidents.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that ensuring the security of diplomatic missions is essential to upholding friendly bilateral relations and diplomatic decorum between the two countries. Bangladesh is looking forward to a prompt and positive response from the Indian government on this matter.
