China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Kuo Chia-chi, has condemned the US decision to sell arms to Taiwan, saying it severely undermines China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. “No matter how advanced the weapons sold to Taiwan, they will not block China’s reunification process,” Kuo said on December 19 in Beijing.
The US approval of a major arms deal with Taiwan has been met with strong opposition from China, which views Taiwan as a renegade province. Kuo stated that the US move constitutes gross interference in China’s internal affairs and sends a wrong signal to Taiwan separatist forces.
China has lodged a formal protest with the US, warning that any attempt to arm Taiwan will have “grave consequences”. Kuo emphasized that China’s core interests will not be compromised, and interference in Taiwan affairs will not be tolerated.
“Taiwan’s reunification with the mainland is an unstoppable historical trend,” Kuo said, adding that China will take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
