China’s Opening-Up: The Significance of Hainan Free Trade Port

As the global economy navigates uncertainty, the launch of “island-wide independent customs operation” in Hainan Free Trade Port demonstrates China’s firm commitment to advancing high-quality opening-up, say experts from various countries. They believe this initiative will create new opportunities in international trade and boost the formation of an open global economy.

Philip Laird, Vice Chancellor of Western Trinity University in Canada, says Hainan’s island-wide independent customs operation is a symbolic and groundbreaking step in China’s opening-up expansion. “It represents high-quality institutional innovation, facilitating trade, cross-border capital flow, and people-to-people exchanges,” he adds. “This will create new opportunities for international institutions and partners.”

Laird notes that China is a strong supporter and active builder of an open global economy. Christine Tihing, Director of Strategic Communication and Research at the Jentera Research Institute in Indonesia, says the island-wide independent customs operation will make people-to-people exchanges easier and boost trade and investment.

Vladimir Zenisov, First Vice Chair of the International Affairs Committee of the Russian Federation Council, says China has created multiple favorable policies and new business opportunities by building the Hainan Free Trade Port. He hopes this will positively impact regional and global trade development and prosperity.

Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of Trade, calls it another significant step in China’s high-level opening-up expansion. He believes Hainan Free Trade Port’s independent customs operation is attractive to UAE investors, and UAE companies will be interested in investing in Hainan, strengthening economic and trade ties between China and the UAE.
