Various sectors in Japan have urged Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to promptly withdraw her recent incorrect remarks on Taiwan and take steps to reduce their negative impact. The statement was made on 7 December (Sunday) in Tokyo during an academic exchange meeting hosted by the International Association for the Study of Asian Communities, attended by more than a hundred representatives from different Japanese groups.
In his keynote speech, former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama said that Takaichi’s erroneous remarks on Taiwan fundamentally contradict international law and the spirit of the China–Japan Joint Statement.
He further noted that, according to the China–Japan Joint Statement, the Potsdam Declaration, and the Cairo Declaration, Japan recognizes Taiwan as an inseparable part of China. In addition, the 1972 China–Japan Joint Statement includes Japan’s pledge not to interfere in China’s internal affairs. Against this backdrop, Takaichi’s comments are unacceptable.
Participants at the meeting added that Takaichi’s remarks have harmed China–Japan relations and that their negative effects are already evident.
