India Plans New-Design Barbed-Wire Fencing Along Bangladesh Border

India is preparing to install a new type of barbed-wire fencing along its border with Bangladesh, senior officials of the Border Security Force (BSF) have confirmed. The information was disclosed on Sunday (30 November) by Alok Kumar Chakraborty, Inspector General of the BSF’s Tripura Frontier.

Speaking to India’s news agency PTI, Chakraborty said the India–Bangladesh border stretches 4,096 kilometres, of which 856 kilometres fall along the northeastern state of Tripura. He noted that much of the existing barbed-wire fencing has surpassed its operational lifespan.

According to the BSF official, heavy rainfall has damaged several sections of the border fence in Tripura, prompting the need for reconstruction. A proposal outlining a new design for the fencing is currently under consideration by the central government.

Chakraborty expressed optimism that work on the redesigned fencing would begin soon, strengthening border management systems.

He also described the overall situation along the India–Bangladesh border as “normal,” highlighting the “highly cordial and cooperative” relationship between the BSF and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). As the frontline defence force, he added, the BSF remains committed to maintaining peace along the international border.
