China’s Experience Valuable for the Olympic Movement: Coventry

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry has said that the opening ceremony of China’s recently concluded National Games was “simply outstanding.” Coventry, who visited China for the first time, made the remarks in an interview with CGTN of China Media Group after attending the ceremony.

She noted that the event showcased an impressive fusion of culture, sports, and technology. She also spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping about the drum and musical performances featured in the ceremony. President Xi further shared with her an overview of the economic development of China’s Greater Bay Area.

Coventry emphasized that sports can contribute significantly to social development, enhance social cohesion, and greatly reduce overall social expenditure. According to her, when communities are healthier, the burden on the healthcare system is effectively reduced.

Responding to President Xi’s statement that China hopes to deepen its high-quality cooperation with the IOC and contribute Chinese wisdom and strength to global sports governance, Coventry said, “We will continue to work closely with the Chinese Olympic Committee. The entire Olympic Movement can learn from China’s experience.”

Highlighting the growing influence of technology and artificial intelligence in global sports and the Olympic Movement, she said these advancements can support athletes’ training, offer medical and nutritional guidance, assist with officiating and scoring, and enhance audience engagement.

During Coventry’s visit, CMG signed a long-term agreement with the IOC to broadcast the Olympic Games from 2026 to 2032. Regarding this, she said, “We can build an even stronger partnership.”

As IOC President, Coventry expressed her expectation of further deepening cooperation with China and jointly promoting the robust development of the Olympic Movement.
