U.S. Appoints Steve Fagin as Civilian Chief to Help Enforce Durable Ceasefire in Gaza

The United States has appointed Steve Fagin as the new civilian chief tasked with helping to implement and sustain a permanent ceasefire in war-ravaged Gaza, the State Department announced on Friday. Fagin, a seasoned Middle East diplomat, has served as the U.S. Ambassador to Yemen since 2022 and recently acted as the United States’ top diplomat in Baghdad, Iraq, for a three-month period.

Fagin will work alongside Lieutenant General Patrick Frank, who is already serving as the military head of the newly established Civil–Military Coordination Center. The center — set up on October 17 following the October 10 ceasefire mediated by President Donald Trump — is responsible for monitoring ceasefire violations and coordinating humanitarian aid and other logistics into Gaza.

Currently, the center includes about 200 U.S. military personnel who are working in coordination with Israel, European countries, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, the United Nations, and various relief agencies.

Fagin’s appointment aims to ensure the ceasefire is effectively and sustainably enforced, improving the delivery of aid and security for Gaza’s civilian population while reducing the risk of renewed hostilities.
