Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng has called for expanding the scope of cooperation between Beijing and Washington to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. He made the remarks on September 29 during a reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., marking China’s National Day.
Ambassador Xie highlighted that China and the United States share broad common interests and enormous potential for collaboration. Bilateral trade, he noted, has grown from less than $2.5 billion in 1979 to nearly $688.3 billion in 2024—demonstrating the strong resilience and underlying momentum of China-U.S. relations.
He further stressed that cooperation in areas such as combating illegal immigration, curbing fentanyl trafficking, tackling telecom fraud and financial crimes, advancing cancer prevention and treatment, addressing infectious diseases, and developing artificial intelligence could open new horizons for both nations. He pointed out that recent progress in economic and trade consultations proves that disputes can be resolved through dialogue and negotiation.
Underscoring China’s core concerns, Xie reiterated that the Taiwan issue remains the political foundation of China-U.S. ties. He urged Washington to strictly adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, and to refrain from undermining UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 or challenging the international consensus on the matter.
The ambassador also announced that following the implementation of China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy, the “China Consular” app will soon launch its visa services in the U.S. He invited American friends to visit China and expressed hope that the U.S. would create favorable conditions to further enhance people-to-people exchanges.
The reception, held on the evening of September 29 to celebrate the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, was attended by more than 700 guests, including U.S. government officials and representatives from various sectors.
