Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a Gaza-bound humanitarian convoy, has sparked widespread condemnation and protests across the world. The flotilla, carrying food and life-saving supplies for Palestinians in Gaza, was stopped late Wednesday night by Israeli naval forces.
According to reports, Israeli commandos boarded several of the ships, cut off live transmissions, and detained more than 200 volunteers, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. At least 13 vessels were seized and redirected to an Israeli naval port for questioning.
Malaysia, Turkey, Ireland, and other countries strongly condemned the move. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim described the incident as an act of “intimidation and coercion,” revealing that 12 Malaysian nationals were on board the seized vessels. Turkey’s Foreign Ministry denounced the raid as “fascist and militaristic,” pledging legal action to secure the release of detained Turkish citizens.
Ireland’s Foreign Minister Simon Harris called it “an attack on a peaceful humanitarian initiative,” stressing that Irish nationals’ safety was the government’s priority. Meanwhile, French MEP Emma Fouroux, who was aboard one of the flotilla’s ships, urged global mobilization against Israel, declaring: “Block Israel, cripple the global economy, end the siege and genocide in Gaza.”
The Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed that the detainees were being transferred to a naval base for interrogation.
The incident has triggered mass protests in Spain, Italy, Germany, Turkey, Greece, Argentina, Mexico, and Colombia, with demonstrators demanding the immediate release of the detainees and an end to Israel’s Gaza blockade. In Buenos Aires, protesters marched in solidarity, calling for the freedom of Argentine lawmaker Celeste Fierro, who was also on board one of the vessels.
Protests also erupted in Ankara, Mexico City, Bogotá, and Madrid, where demonstrators condemned the raid as a blatant violation of international law and human rights.
Despite the blockade, the Global Sumud Flotilla has vowed to continue its humanitarian mission, insisting that aid must reach the besieged people of Gaza.
