Several diplomats walked out of the United Nations General Assembly as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu began his speech, in protest against the ongoing conflict and human rights violations in Gaza.
Middle East Eye reported on Friday that many diplomats left their seats immediately as Netanyahu took the stage. Prior to the session, the Palestinian Permanent Mission to the UN had sent letters urging world leaders to boycott his address, labeling Netanyahu a “war criminal” and noting that the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against him in November 2024.
Since the Israeli offensive began in October 2023, approximately 70,000 Palestinians have been killed, around 80% of whom were civilians. The ongoing attacks have left nearly the entire population of Gaza displaced at least once, with countless homes, schools, and hospitals destroyed.
Analysts suggest that the walkout reflects growing international criticism of Israel and demonstrates global solidarity with the Palestinian people’s suffering.
