During the High-Level Global Development Initiative Summit hosted by China at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Tuesday, China announced that, as a responsible major developing country, it will not seek any special or discriminatory treatment in current or future World Trade Organization (WTO) discussions.
In a statement released Wednesday, WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said that China’s stance sends a strong signal in support of WTO reforms. “This is a pivotal moment for the WTO,” she noted. “China’s decision demonstrates its commitment to building a more balanced and fair global trade system. Undoubtedly, this approach will help us create a more flexible and effective organization.”
