Former First Lady Simone Gbagbo to Run for President in Ivory Coast

Former First Lady Simone Gbagbo is set to contest the upcoming presidential election in Ivory Coast. The 76-year-old political figure, widely known across the country as the “Iron Lady,” has emerged as the main challenger to incumbent President Alassane Ouattara. The election is scheduled for October 25.

Simone Gbagbo’s political journey is closely intertwined with her former husband, Laurent Gbagbo, who served as president from 2000 to 2011. Known for her strong-willed personality, Simone earned the nickname “Iron Lady.” While supporters view her as compassionate, critics have long seen her as a symbol of formidable authority.

Beginning her career as a teacher, Simone was active in the labor movement, which led to her meeting Laurent. In 1982, the couple co-founded the Ivorian Popular Front (FPI). When Laurent rose to power, Simone became a powerful behind-the-scenes figure in the government, playing a significant role in suppressing rebellions, election rigging, and quelling opposition.

Although Laurent was defeated in the 2010 election, his refusal to step down sparked a civil war that claimed around 3,000 lives. During this period, both Simone and Laurent sought refuge in the presidential palace bunker, from where they were later arrested. Simone was sentenced to 20 years in prison but was released in 2013 under a general amnesty.

She faced charges of crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court (ICC) but was ultimately acquitted, while Laurent served seven years in The Hague. The couple divorced in 2021 after returning to Ivory Coast.

Following her release, Simone Gbagbo established a new political party, the Movement of Capable Generations (MGC). She is now contesting the presidency under this banner. Analysts suggest that many of Laurent’s supporters may vote for Simone, as he is barred from running due to legal restrictions. If elected, she would become Ivory Coast’s first female president.
