Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has stated that the national election scheduled for February will not be an ordinary election; rather, it will be a foundational election that will determine the future direction of Bangladesh. He emphasized that it is essential to finalize fundamental reforms before the election. Yunus further clarified that holding the election in the first half of February is the only viable option.
The remarks were made on Thursday evening during a meeting of the National Consensus Commission at the State Guesthouse Jamuna.
He noted, “One of the primary responsibilities of the current interim government is to implement reforms. Alongside the election and the judicial system, the implementation of the July Accord must also be given equal priority.”
During the nearly two-hour meeting, the commission discussed proposals on implementing the July Accord, opinions from political parties, and presentations from a six-member special committee. The commission stated that a comprehensive report will soon be submitted to the interim government. To this end, the National Consensus Commission will meet again with political parties on Sunday, September 14.
Present at the meeting were Vice-Chair Professor Ali Riaz, members Justice Md. Emdadul Haq, Dr. Iftikharuzzaman, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, Dr. Md. Ayub Mia, and Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser Monir Haidar.
Also attending were interim government advisers Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan, Dr. Asif Nazrul, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, and National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman.
