UK Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner Resigns After Admitting Tax Evasion
Britain’s Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has resigned after admitting to tax evasion allegations. On Friday, she submitted her resignation letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, acknowledging the charges brought against her.
In her letter, Rayner wrote: “When I purchased a new home, I did not seek professional advice on tax matters. This was a mistake, and I take full responsibility. I am sorry.”
Analysts view her resignation as a major setback for both the British government and the Labour Party. Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed deep regret over Rayner’s departure, saying: “I am profoundly saddened by Angela’s resignation, but I respect her decision.”
Rayner had been under growing pressure for weeks over allegations that she concealed details related to the purchase of a new home and associated tax liabilities. Once a formal investigation began, her political position became increasingly untenable. Ultimately, she stepped down to contain the crisis.
