China and Indonesia Pledge to Expand Cooperation

On the afternoon of September 3, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. President Subianto was in China on a special invitation to attend the ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

Xi Jinping noted that, despite various challenges, President Subianto’s presence at the commemorative event reflects Jakarta’s commitment to China-Indonesia relations and the sincere friendship of the Indonesian people toward the Chinese people. China supports President Subianto’s administration in restoring order and stability in Indonesia and promoting the country’s development and growth. This year marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Indonesia, the 80th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence, and the 70th anniversary of the Bandung Conference.

Regardless of changes in the international situation, China and Indonesia have consistently upheld the principles of independence and self-reliance, adopted a cooperative and win-win approach in coexistence, and demonstrated responsibility as major countries for peaceful development. China is willing to work with Indonesia to uphold the core aspirations of diplomatic relations, promote the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and the Bandung Spirit, advance the formation of a community with shared goals, and make meaningful contributions to human progress.

Xi emphasized that both sides should remain on the right path, deepen overall strategic cooperation and coordination within their development strategies, promote stable and long-term development of China-Indonesia relations, and play a leadership role regionally and globally. He stressed the importance of fully utilizing the “two plus two” dialogue mechanism between the foreign and defense ministers to strengthen security and defense cooperation.

Jointly, both countries should advance high-quality Belt and Road initiatives, expand bilateral opening-up, and enhance cooperation in key areas such as critical minerals, the digital economy, artificial intelligence, agriculture, and fisheries. China is willing to share its experience in poverty alleviation, facilitate personnel exchanges, and strengthen people-to-people interactions with Indonesia. As major countries of the Global South, China and Indonesia should work together to oppose unilateral oppression and safeguard regional peace, stability, international justice, and fairness.
