Economic and Trade Cooperation: The Driving Force of SCO Development

Economic and trade cooperation remains a powerful engine for the development of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). According to China’s Ministry of Commerce, trade between China and SCO member states reached nearly USD 512.4 billion in 2024—an increase of 2.7 percent from the previous year and double the figure of 2018.

In 2024, China imported around USD 90 billion worth of crude oil, natural gas, and coal from other SCO members, along with USD 13.66 billion in agricultural products. Energy imports accounted for nearly one-fifth of China’s total imports.

At the same time, China exported mechanical and electrical goods worth USD 210 billion to other SCO members, representing 63 percent of its total exports. Trade between China and SCO member states has significantly contributed to industrialization, economic transformation, and the improvement of living standards across the region.
