Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday morning during the 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit and the 80th anniversary of China’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
President Xi emphasized the shared goals and destiny of China and the Maldives. “Last year, we agreed to elevate our bilateral relations into a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and build a community of shared objectives. Over the past year, cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative has advanced positively, deepening strategic collaboration for the benefit of both peoples,” Xi said.
Xi also highlighted China’s commitment to supporting the Maldives in safeguarding sovereignty, independence, and regional integrity, while strengthening exchanges across political parties, legislatures, and governments to enhance mutual understanding, trust, and friendship.
President Muizzu congratulated China on the successful completion of its 14th Five-Year Plan and praised its economic and cultural achievements. “Visiting China for the second time during my term is an honor. Each visit inspires me with China’s long history, culture, and the warmth of its people,” he said. He reaffirmed the Maldives’ adherence to the One-China Policy and its intent to expand cooperation in trade, investment, construction, housing, and tourism, while strengthening coordination in multilateral frameworks such as the SCO to build a shared community of common objectives.
