Australia has signed a memorandum of understanding with Nauru to transfer certain migrants to the Pacific island nation, a move that will affect more than 220 people, including some convicted of serious crimes.
The agreement was signed on Friday (August 29) during a visit to Nauru by Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke. Under the deal, migrants who lack legal residency rights in Australia will be relocated to Nauru, where the government will provide medical services and long-term settlement options. Canberra will also extend financial assistance to Nauru, though detailed figures have not been disclosed.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the deal includes an initial payment of 408 million Australian dollars, with an additional annual commitment of around 70 million Australian dollars.
Minister Burke emphasized that individuals without valid visas must now leave Australia immediately.
