The U.S. Federal Appeals Court has ruled that former President Donald Trump’s imposition of most tariffs was unlawful. In its ruling, the court stated that the president does not hold exclusive authority to impose tariffs, which is a core responsibility of Congress. The decision passed by a 7–4 vote.
According to a BBC report, a significant portion of the additional tariffs imposed on China, Mexico, Canada, and several other countries around the world were declared invalid. The court noted that the Emergency Economic Powers Act makes no reference to tariffs, rendering Trump’s actions inconsistent with the law.
Reacting angrily to the ruling, Trump said, “If this ruling stands, it will destroy the United States.” However, the court specified that the decision will take effect from October 14, giving Trump time to appeal to the Supreme Court.
Prior to the ruling, the White House had warned that overturning the tariffs could have devastating financial and economic consequences.
