Cambodia Approves Law to Revoke Citizenship for Treason

Cambodia’s parliament on Monday passed a law that allows authorities to strip citizenship from individuals accused of treason. The legislation targets those who conspire with foreign powers against the country’s interests, sovereignty, territorial integrity, or national security.

The bill received near-unanimous support, with only five lawmakers from the ruling Cambodian People’s Party abstaining. It now awaits the King’s approval before taking effect.

Prime Minister Hun Sen, who has ruled Cambodia for decades, said in June that tougher measures were needed against those collaborating with foreign actors. Several opposition leaders, including exiled Cambodia National Rescue Party co-founders Sam Rainsy and Mu Sochua, have already fled the country to avoid arrest.

Rights groups, however, warned that the legislation could undermine freedom of expression. In a joint statement, 50 organizations cautioned that granting the government sweeping authority over citizenship risks further shrinking democratic space.
