Mozambique Keen to Learn from China’s Development Experience: President Chapo

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo recently gave an exclusive interview to China Media Group (CMG) in the capital city, Maputo.

August 15 marked the 20th anniversary of the “Two Mountains” concept. Referring to the idea, President Chapo said: “Clear waters and green mountains are invaluable assets.” He noted that this quote from President Xi Jinping reflects profound insight and far-reaching vision. Having visited China seven times, Chapo expressed his strong interest in learning from China’s development experience, such as the establishment of special economic zones and the pursuit of rapid growth.

During the interview, President Chapo emphasized that Mozambique and China — and their peoples — share a bond as close as brothers. This year, Mozambique celebrates the 50th anniversary of its independence, which also makes the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties with China especially meaningful.

Speaking about the Maputo Bridge, the largest suspension bridge in Africa, he said: “For us, it stands as a witness to half a century of friendship between Mozambique and China, a shining example of extensive cooperation between the two countries over the past five decades, and an important symbol of collaboration between China and the African continent. We hope to continue building more projects of this kind.”

President Chapo further stressed that Mozambique and China should open a new chapter of high-quality cooperation in infrastructure development and agricultural advancement. Such collaboration, he said, should not only consolidate the achievements of the past 50 years but also extend toward the centenary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

He also added: “On this occasion, I would like to congratulate China on the successful implementation of the ‘Two Mountains’ concept. I fully agree with President Xi Jinping’s vision. I believe this concept will continue to illuminate the path ahead. It is our responsibility — and that of all nations — to follow this vision in order to safeguard nature.”

President Chapo pointed out that President Xi Jinping’s Africa policies will have a positive impact on the continent’s development in the years to come. In today’s world of complexity, conflict, and uncertainty, these initiatives carry profound significance. He underlined that no country can achieve growth and development in isolation — cooperation among all nations is essential. As a globally influential leader, President Xi’s initiatives deserve collective attention and joint efforts.
