On Friday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas over the phone to discuss the escalating Gaza crisis. Erdogan strongly criticized Israel’s plan to fully occupy Gaza, calling it unacceptable and warning of severe humanitarian consequences.
He reaffirmed Turkey’s steadfast support for Palestine and highlighted the significance of joint statements by France, Britain, and Canada recognizing Palestinian statehood. Erdogan also assured that Turkey will continue its efforts to promote peace in the region.
Meanwhile, thousands of people in Tel Aviv staged a massive protest demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. The protest followed Israel’s security cabinet approval last Friday of a plan to take full control of Gaza, described by the Prime Minister as a roadmap to defeat Hamas.
However, Israel’s military chief, General Yair Golan, has labeled the plan dangerous and a “trap” for the army. He expressed concerns that the occupation could endanger the lives of at least 50 Israeli hostages held by Hamas, with at least 20 believed to be alive.
The international community and some of Israel’s allies continue to push for negotiations to secure the hostages’ release and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, but Prime Minister Netanyahu remains firm in his stance.
