DoE Mobile Courts Crack Down on Pollution Violations Across Bangladesh

Under the initiative of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Department of Environment (DoE) today conducted five mobile court drives in Narayanganj, Bandarban, Jashore, Sunamganj, and in Dhaka city’s Mohammadpur and Dhaka Udyan areas against the production, sale, supply, and marketing of banned polythene.

During the operations, six cases were filed, resulting in fines totaling BDT 25,500, one polythene trader was sentenced to seven days’ simple imprisonment, and 1,452 kg of polythene was seized. In addition, awareness messages were delivered, and leaflets were distributed among several supermarkets, shop owners, and members of the public.

In compliance with the Noise Pollution (Control) Rules 2006, the DoE conducted three mobile court drives in Manikganj, Meherpur, and Naogaon districts. These resulted in 13 cases, fines amounting to BDT 18,000, and the seizure of 13 hydraulic horns. Several vehicle drivers were also cautioned during the drives.

To curb excessive black smoke emissions from vehicles, the DoE carried out a mobile court drive in Dhaka city’s Ramna area. Seven cases were filed, with fines totaling BDT 20,000, and several transport drivers were warned.

Meanwhile, against illegal lead/battery factories, a mobile court drive in South Keraniganj, Dhaka, led to two cases, fines amounting to BDT 70,000, and the disconnection of utility services to two factories.

The Department of Environment will continue such anti-pollution drives in the future.
