Powerful 6.0-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Indonesia

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia’s West Papua region. The country’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency confirmed the incident on Saturday (July 26), according to a report by Anadolu Agency.

The agency stated that the quake occurred at 12:31 p.m. local time, with its epicenter located 64 kilometers from Sorong, the regional capital, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Authorities have assured that there is no immediate tsunami threat following the quake. Additionally, no casualties or infrastructure damage have been reported so far.

Germany’s Center for Geosciences (GFZ) measured the quake at a magnitude of 5.9, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported it at 5.7.

Notably, Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a seismically active zone prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
