Rahul Gandhi Challenges PM Modi to Open Debate, Proposes RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat as Moderator

Nov. 5 — In an escalating political confrontation, Indian Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has formally challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to an open, public debate, offering the prime minister the discretion to select the moderator—even suggesting Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat for the role.

Reiterating the challenge in a video statement released Tuesday on social media platform X, the senior Congress leader proposed a structured face-to-face format to address contested national issues in full view of domestic and international media alongside Indian youth representatives.

“On one side of the table sits the Prime Minister, and on the other, myself,” Gandhi stated. “The Prime Minister may select anyone he deems fit as the judge or moderator; he may even assign this responsibility to Mohan Bhagwat ji.”

The direct overture follows persistent exchanges in which ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders have characterized the political opposition as “anti-national” entities backed by foreign interests. Rebutting those characterizations, Gandhi asserted that an unscripted, televised debate before the public would clarify accountability and expose who truly works against national interests.

Outlining the proposed scope of discussion, Gandhi urged scrutiny beyond rhetorical barbs to encompass systemic matters, including India’s prevailing economic landscape, bilateral trade pacts with the United States, corporate governance allegations involving industrialist Gautam Adani, and global references linked to unsealed Epstein files.

The proposition has intensified partisan exchanges in New Delhi. While Congress leaders frame the challenge as an essential exercise in democratic transparency, senior BJP figures have rejected the maneuver as a public-relations distraction, maintaining that parliamentary debate remains the constitutionally designated forum for policy contestation. The Prime Minister’s Office has given no indication that Modi intends to accept the proposal.
