India’s People on One Side, Modi and His Core Aides on the Other: Rahul Gandhi Targets CEC, Moves Supreme Court

NEW DELHI — In a fierce political broadside, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi declared on Monday that the people of India stand firmly on one side, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar stand opposed on the other.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi regarding the ongoing political standoff and mass detentions in the capital, Gandhi announced that the opposition would file a writ petition against CEC Gyanesh Kumar in the Supreme Court of India at 3:00 p.m.

Leveling direct accusations of electoral malpractice and vote theft against the Election Commission, the senior Congress leader pointed out that public discontent has crystallized into organic mass mobilizations across the capital over the past four to five days under the banners of ‘Chalo Delhi’ and ‘March for Democracy’.

Gandhi sharply questioned the heavy security clampdown and containment measures enforced by law enforcement, asking why the capital had been turned into a virtual fortress to suppress peaceful citizens. He alleged that the Modi-led central government is deploying state machinery solely to shield and insulate the Chief Election Commissioner from institutional accountability.

Warning the ruling establishment against protecting the poll chief, Gandhi asserted that the government is committing a strategic blunder:

“The more the government attempts to shield the Chief Election Commissioner, the easier it will become to trace and expose the real masterminds operating behind the scenes.”

The opposition’s escalation to the apex court comes amid an escalating political confrontation, with opposition parties demanding independent judicial scrutiny over the conduct of national electoral institutions and the immediate removal of top election officials.
