28 September :Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, wife of former Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has died at the age of 100 while receiving treatment at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur.
She died on Monday morning, 28 September. Her son, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir, confirmed the news of her death to Bernama.
Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed deep sorrow over her passing, describing her death as a major loss to Malaysian society and the country.
Anwar made the remarks before delivering the opening address at the International Future Conference 2026 at the International Islamic University Malaysia’s (IIUM) ISTAC campus in Kuala Lumpur. He also called on delegates attending the conference to recite Surah Al-Fatihah in memory of Dr Siti Hasmah.
Throughout her long life, Dr Siti Hasmah remained active in medicine, public service and social work. During Mahathir Mohamad’s long political career, she became a prominent and influential figure in Malaysia’s public life.
Her death has prompted expressions of grief across Malaysia’s political and social circles.
