21 September :Bangladesh has taken steps to expand its diplomatic and consular operations across three strategically important economic regions in Asia, Europe and Latin America. The government has decided to establish three new consulates general in Guangzhou, China; Frankfurt, Germany; and São Paulo, Brazil.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening diplomatic relations, expanding opportunities for trade and investment, and making consular services more accessible to Bangladeshi expatriates in these regions.
A letter issued by the Policy and Organisation Wing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 31 August communicated the decision to establish the new consulates. The ministry has also sent a proposal to the Ministry of Finance seeking to incorporate the required manpower, vehicles and office equipment for the proposed missions into the organisational structure. According to the letter, the necessary approval has also been obtained from the Ministry of Public Administration.
The Foreign Ministry said Guangzhou, Frankfurt and São Paulo are all important to Bangladesh’s diplomatic, commercial and consular interests. Against the backdrop of the current geopolitical landscape, the expansion of Bangladesh’s representation in these regions is intended to safeguard national interests, enhance the country’s image and strengthen economic and trade relations.
Expanding Operations in Southern China from Guangzhou
Guangzhou, one of southern China’s major port cities and commercial centres, has a significant presence of Bangladeshi businesspeople, students and expatriates. The region also maintains commercial links with Bangladesh, including in the garment and other sectors. The proposed establishment of a separate consulate general in Guangzhou is therefore being viewed in the context of Bangladesh’s commercial and consular interests.
According to the Foreign Ministry, Bangladesh currently has missions in Beijing and Kunming. However, the considerable geographical distance from Guangzhou makes it difficult to provide adequate attention to activities in the region. The decision to establish a new consulate in Guangzhou has been taken in response to this reality.
Once operational, the new mission is expected to broaden Bangladesh’s diplomatic engagement in southern China while creating greater scope for direct activities in trade, investment and expatriate services. It could also play a role in addressing the consular needs of Bangladeshi businesspeople and expatriates in the region.
Frankfurt to Serve Economic and Expatriate Interests
The plan to establish a consulate general in Frankfurt is also linked to Bangladesh’s economic and diplomatic priorities. Germany is one of Bangladesh’s major export markets, while the European Union remains one of the country’s principal export destinations.
According to the information provided, bilateral merchandise trade between Bangladesh and Germany stood at around €9 billion in 2024. Cooperation between the two countries extends beyond trade to areas including climate change, energy, governance, migration, skills development and sustainable supply chains.
As one of Europe’s major financial and business centres, Frankfurt offers Bangladesh an opportunity to expand business and investment engagement while improving access to consular services for Bangladeshi expatriates. The initiative is also expected to contribute to strengthening Bangladesh’s diplomatic presence in Europe.
São Paulo Opens New Opportunities in Latin America
The decision to establish a consulate general in São Paulo could provide Bangladesh with new opportunities to expand its diplomatic and commercial presence in Latin America. Brazil is one of South America’s largest economies and an important member of BRICS. Political and diplomatic contacts between Bangladesh and Brazil have also increased in recent years.
São Paulo is one of Brazil’s principal industrial and commercial centres. Once established, the new consulate could help expand Bangladesh’s commercial links with Latin American markets, explore investment opportunities and further strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation with Brazil.
A relevant official said the establishment of consulates in Guangzhou, Frankfurt and São Paulo would expand Bangladesh’s diplomatic presence across three important economic regions in Asia, Europe and Latin America. At the same time, the move would strengthen the country’s capacity to provide consular services to Bangladeshis living in these regions.
