September 8, 2026:At least 11 climbers have been killed and six others injured in a major avalanche in Russia’s North Caucasus region, according to local emergency authorities cited by CNN on Monday, September 7.
The avalanche struck Mount Mizhirgi, one of the highest peaks in the North Caucasus, at around 5 p.m. local time on Sunday. A group of 33 climbers was in the area when the avalanche occurred.
Emergency officials said that by 9 a.m. Monday, 10 members of the group had managed to descend the mountain on their own. The whereabouts or fate of six other climbers, however, remained unconfirmed at that time.
More than 50 emergency personnel have been involved in the search and rescue operation. The effort has been hampered by the remote and difficult mountainous terrain, as well as the high risk of further avalanches.
The incident occurred in Kabardino-Balkaria, a mountainous republic in Russia’s North Caucasus.
