September 5, 2026: Uruguay has declared a nationwide health emergency after the detection of the highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza virus among domestic poultry in the country.
According to a report by Anadolu Agency on Saturday, the outbreak was detected in the Colonia department in southwestern Uruguay. The finding was confirmed by the General Directorate of Livestock Services under the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries.
Authorities said the virus was not detected during an initial rapid test. However, subsequent analysis of samples at a government laboratory confirmed the presence of the H5 virus.
To contain the outbreak, authorities have imposed strict restrictions on the movement of poultry from affected farms, as well as on unregistered and domestic birds. They have also suspended bird fairs, auctions and public exhibitions.
Authorities have instructed poultry owners to keep domestic birds in fully enclosed and covered facilities to prevent contact with wild birds. The culling of poultry at affected farms has begun, along with disinfection operations at the farms.
Poultry producers have also been urged to strengthen biosecurity measures, with particular emphasis on controlling the movement of birds and limiting unnecessary contact during feeding, handling and other farm activities.
Authorities said that consuming poultry meat and eggs does not pose a health risk to humans when properly handled and prepared. However, despite the relatively low risk of transmission to humans, people have been advised not to handle wild or sick birds.
The nationwide emergency measures are aimed at containing the outbreak at an early stage and preventing the virus from spreading further among Uruguay’s poultry population.
