September 2: Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun addressed questions concerning a landslide disaster at a regular press conference in Beijing on Wednesday. He said climate change is a common crisis facing all humanity, and no country can remain immune to its impacts. China will further strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the international community to effectively prevent and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.
The spokesperson said that, according to assessments by experts from both China and Nepal, the disaster was caused by the destabilisation of a glacier under the long-term effects of global warming. Ice and rocks rapidly collapsed from a glacier in Nepal, eroding the mountainside and triggering the disaster.
In fact, China and Nepal have maintained good cooperation in the areas of meteorology, water resources, and disaster prevention and mitigation. Following the disaster, China also shared important information with Nepal, including images of the affected area, satellite and hydropower-related data, as well as early warnings concerning an upstream landslide dam.
The spokesperson stressed that China will continue to strongly support Nepal’s disaster relief efforts and further strengthen cooperation in areas such as disaster prevention and mitigation.
