Bangladesh has agreed to purchase additional Boeing aircraft from the United States, with U.S. Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs Sergio Gor describing a new agreement between U.S. President Donald Trump and Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Tarique Rahman as an “extraordinary deal.”
In a post on X on Sunday, August 30, Gor said President Trump and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had reached what he called an “extraordinary deal” during the week. Under the agreement, Bangladesh has committed to spending billions of dollars on additional Boeing aircraft.
The U.S. envoy did not provide details on the exact number of aircraft Bangladesh plans to purchase or the specific Boeing models involved. He said only that the country’s previous preliminary purchase order had been significantly expanded.
Gor also did not disclose the total financial value of the new agreement. As of Sunday, there had been no immediate official statement from the Bangladesh government on his remarks.
The announcement comes roughly a month after Gor visited Dhaka. The U.S. special envoy travelled to Bangladesh on July 30, and the new information regarding the expansion of Boeing purchases emerged about a month after his visit.
It remains unclear whether the purchase of Boeing aircraft was discussed during Gor’s meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman during the July visit. At the time, Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry said the discussions focused on bilateral relations between Dhaka and Washington, trade and a range of economic issues.
Bangladesh had previously expanded its plans to purchase Boeing aircraft in July 2025, while the then-interim government was engaged in trade negotiations with the Trump administration.
The initial plan was to purchase 14 Boeing aircraft for Biman Bangladesh Airlines. The plan was subsequently expanded to 25 aircraft.
The proposed purchases were intended to modernize and expand the national flag carrier’s fleet. Gor’s latest remarks indicate that the earlier purchase commitment has now been expanded further under the new agreement.
However, details of the latest expansion remain unclear. The number of additional aircraft, their specific models and the total value of the agreement have yet to be disclosed.
Further official announcements from the relevant authorities are therefore expected to clarify the full structure, scale and financial terms of the new Boeing purchase agreement.
