At least 37 Sudanese migrants have died while attempting to travel by sea from Libya to Greece as they fled the ongoing civil war and violence in Sudan, according to the El Fasher Resistance Coordination, a Sudanese civil society group.
In a statement, the group said the migrants had left Sudan in search of safety and a chance to preserve their lives. After fleeing the war-ravaged country and reaching Libya, they attempted to cross the Mediterranean by sea to reach Greece. The journey for safety, however, ended in tragedy.
The list of 37 victims released by the group includes a seven-month-old baby as well as children aged 3, 6, 8, 9, 12, 13 and 16. Several women and members of the same families were also among those who died.
The victims reportedly came from different parts of Sudan, including El Fasher, El Geneina, Nyala, Gedaref, East Nile and Babanusa.
According to the El Fasher Resistance Coordination, people from El Fasher accounted for the largest number of victims. The organization said the residents of the conflict-hit city had continued to face the threat of death wherever they sought refuge.
“Death has given no respite to the people of El Fasher; it has followed them in their own city, along the path of displacement, on migration routes and even at sea,” the group said.
The deaths occurred amid Sudan’s devastating humanitarian crisis. Local and international organizations have reported widespread atrocities against civilians since the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized control of El Fasher on October 26, 2025.
The broader conflict between Sudan’s military and the RSF has been ongoing since April 2023, resulting in extensive casualties and mass displacement. Various estimates indicate that more than 10,000 people have been killed since the conflict began, while around 13 million people have been displaced from their homes.
Amid deteriorating security, food shortages and severe humanitarian conditions, millions of Sudanese have sought refuge in neighboring countries and elsewhere. Some have turned to dangerous migration routes in an attempt to reach Europe.
The deaths of 37 Sudanese nationals while attempting to travel from Libya to Greece highlight the extreme dangers faced by people undertaking perilous sea crossings in search of safety. The presence of children and multiple members of the same families among the victims has further underscored the human cost of Sudan’s prolonged crisis and the risks confronting those forced to flee.
