Bangladesh has received official approval from FIFA to participate in the upcoming FIFA ASEAN Cup in Indonesia, replacing India after the neighboring country withdrew from the tournament.
The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) had expressed interest in taking up the opportunity after India pulled out, but FIFA’s formal approval was required before Bangladesh could enter the competition. That approval has now been granted.
The development was confirmed at a meeting of the BFF Executive Committee on Saturday, officially clearing the way for Bangladesh to participate in the tournament in India’s place.
India decided to withdraw from the ASEAN Cup as it prepares for a crucial match against Brazil on October 3. The team’s focus on preparations for that fixture prompted its withdrawal from the regional tournament, creating an opening for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh’s participation is also expected to come with significant financial benefits. According to officials, the organizers will cover the participating teams’ travel and accommodation expenses, meaning the BFF will not have to bear a major financial burden for the tournament.
The FIFA ASEAN tournament is scheduled to take place in Indonesia from September 24 to October 6. India had originally been drawn in Group A, and Bangladesh is expected to take India’s place in the same group.
Bangladesh’s potential Group A opponents include hosts Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, giving the national team an opportunity to test itself against several strong international sides.
The last-minute invitation provides Bangladesh with a valuable opportunity to gain international experience and compete at a higher level. With FIFA’s approval now secured, the BFF can turn its focus toward preparations for the tournament.
