Iran canceled a planned military strike against Ukraine after receiving an official apology from the Ukrainian government, a senior military adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Monday.
In an interview with Iranian state television, Mohsen Rezaei, a senior adviser to the Supreme Leader, said Iran’s armed forces had completed all military preparations for an attack on Ukraine but called off the operation at the last moment following Kyiv’s formal apology.
According to Rezaei, Tehran had been preparing a military response after accusing Ukraine of carrying out an attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea in late July.
The alleged attack reportedly killed one crew member aboard the vessel, triggering a sharp escalation in tensions between Tehran and Kyiv and prompting Iran to consider military action, he said.
Rezaei did not provide details about the nature of the planned operation or specify when and how Ukraine conveyed its apology. Ukrainian authorities had not immediately commented publicly on the Iranian claims.
The remarks mark the first public confirmation by a senior Iranian official that Tehran had considered direct military action against Ukraine before ultimately abandoning the plan.
The claims could not be independently verified, and no additional evidence was presented to support the assertion.
