United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for an immediate end to hostilities across all conflict fronts in the Middle East, warning that the region’s escalating violence is rapidly becoming one of the world’s most significant sources of instability.
According to a report published by Middle East Eye, citing Reuters, Guterres said the conflict is not only undermining regional security but also posing serious risks to the global economy, energy supplies, food security and international trade.
The UN chief warned that disruptions linked to the conflict have severely affected maritime commerce through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes. The resulting strain has contributed to volatility in global energy markets, rising fertilizer prices and mounting pressure on international supply chains.
He cautioned that a prolonged conflict could trigger wider economic repercussions, particularly for low- and middle-income countries, where inflation, supply shortages and the risk of economic slowdown could intensify.
Meanwhile, the World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that the current situation could leave around 45 million people facing acute food insecurity worldwide. It also cautioned that inflationary pressures and broader economic challenges could push millions more back into poverty.
Commenting on developments in Gaza, Guterres said the U.S.-announced framework involving the disarmament of Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip could represent a positive step forward. Describing it as “good news,” he urged all parties to pursue dialogue and implement the agreed framework in good faith.
He noted that a roadmap has already been outlined and stressed that the priority now is for both sides to carry out the agreed commitments without delay, uncertainty or attempts to derail the process.
Analysts warn that if the conflict continues, its consequences will extend far beyond the Middle East, placing greater strain on the global economy and worsening humanitarian conditions. Against this backdrop, the United Nations has called on the international community to intensify diplomatic efforts and work toward a swift and peaceful resolution.
