The International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled a revised competition format for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, introducing a new “Super Series” qualifying stage designed to make the tournament more competitive from the outset.
Under the new structure, the three lowest-ranked qualified teams will first compete in a Super Series, with only one team advancing to the main tournament. The other two teams will be eliminated before the group stage begins.
While the decision has drawn criticism from some quarters, the ICC says the new format will increase the significance of every match and enhance the overall competitiveness of the tournament.
According to a Cricbuzz report, the ICC had also considered reverting to a 10-team World Cup during internal discussions. However, it ultimately decided to retain the 14-team tournament while redesigning the competition format.
Sources familiar with the discussions said the changes are intended to improve the quality of the World Cup, raise the competitive value of every fixture and sustain fan interest throughout the tournament.
Following the Super Series, the 12-team main draw will begin. The teams will be divided into two groups of six, with the top-performing sides advancing to a newly introduced Super Seven stage before the tournament concludes with the semi-finals and final.
Cricket analysts believe one of the biggest advantages of the revised format is the sharp reduction in inconsequential matches, as virtually every victory and defeat will have a direct impact on qualification for the next stage.
In its official statement, the ICC said the changes are aimed at making the World Cup more modern, engaging and competitive. The governing body added that every match—from the opening day onward—will carry greater significance under the revised structure.
The ICC also emphasized that Associate Member nations will continue to have a pathway to qualify for the World Cup, providing emerging teams with opportunities to compete on cricket’s biggest stage and supporting the continued global growth of the sport.
The 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, with a total of 60 matches scheduled under the new format.
