Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming people’s lives at an unprecedented pace. However, concerns over algorithmic bias, data privacy breaches and other emerging challenges have also intensified, gradually evolving into global issues related to security, governance and fairness. Against this backdrop, only AI developed and used for the benefit of all can deliver its full potential, according to a global survey conducted by CGTN, a subsidiary of China Media Group (CMG).
The survey found that 85.4 percent of respondents acknowledged the positive impact of AI, while also expressing concern that its rapid development is creating new challenges for global security and governance. Ninety-one percent of respondents said the rapid advancement of AI could increase security risks, including cyberattacks and data breaches. Meanwhile, 92.6 percent warned that AI-generated misinformation and deepfake content pose a serious threat to public trust.
The survey also highlighted concerns over the unequal global distribution of computing power, data resources, skilled talent and digital infrastructure, which has left many developing countries at a disadvantage in the global AI race. Eighty-two point six percent of respondents said developing countries and nations of the Global South should play a greater role in formulating global AI governance rules to ensure a more equitable and inclusive framework.
In addition, 87.5 percent of respondents said the international community should promote AI technologies for the public good and inclusive development to help prevent the widening of the digital divide. Ninety point nine percent believed that open international cooperation, rather than technological blockades, would better support the safe, healthy and sustainable development of artificial intelligence.
The survey was conducted across CGTN’s English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Russian-language platforms. A total of 6,503 internet users from around the world participated in the poll within a 24-hour period.
