Former British ambassador and author Craig Murray has said that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, has remained unwavering in his moral and ideological principles despite years of international pressure, economic sanctions, and security challenges. According to Murray, Khamenei’s firm stance against what he described as the hegemonic policies of the United States and Israel, as well as his opposition to the development of nuclear weapons, has made him a distinctive example of principled leadership in global politics.
In an interview with Press TV, Murray said one of the defining characteristics of Ayatollah Khamenei’s leadership has been his steadfast commitment to religious and ethical values. He argued that, despite prolonged economic sanctions, military threats, and sustained international pressure, Khamenei has not deviated from his stated principles.
Murray noted that while both the United States and Israel possess nuclear weapons, Iran has not pursued the development of such arms despite having the technological capability to do so. He said Khamenei has consistently maintained that the production and use of nuclear weapons are morally unacceptable, describing this position as an important reflection of the Iranian leader’s personal integrity and commitment to principle.
The former British diplomat also claimed that during periods of military conflict, Iran deliberately avoided targeting schools, hospitals, or journalists. In his view, this distinguishes Iran’s conduct from that of the United States and Israel, and reflects the influence of Khamenei’s ethical teachings.
Murray further said that Iran has become a significant focal point for many people who oppose U.S. global influence and Israeli policies. He also expressed a positive assessment of the roles played by Iran and its allies in Yemen and Lebanon in supporting the Palestinian cause and opposing what he described as Israel’s expansionist policies.
Commenting on Khamenei’s political legacy, Murray said the sense of national unity displayed by Iranians during periods of military confrontation involving the United States and Israel serves as a significant indication of the impact of his leadership.
He also criticized prevailing perceptions of Iran in the West, arguing that the country is culturally and ethnically diverse and is home to Jewish and Christian minority communities whose presence, he said, is not adequately reflected in much of the Western media.
Responding to a question about whether Khamenei’s political philosophy would weaken after his death, Murray said recent events have demonstrated that military force cannot eliminate an ideology or religious belief. According to him, developments in Gaza, southern Lebanon, and Iran illustrate that faith can sustain people’s resilience in times of conflict.
He added that while the death of a prominent leader is always a profound loss, the true measure of that leader lies in the ideals, achievements, and legacy left behind.
