U.S. President Donald Trump has attended the G7 Summit in France, with indications that he may pursue new diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Lebanon, following reported progress on a potential ceasefire agreement with Iran.
The summit, held in Évian-les-Bains, comes at a time when Trump’s foreign policy approach and relations with Western allies have sparked discussion and concern within the broader transatlantic alliance.
Upon arrival, Trump held a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, where he described the preliminary understanding with Iran as a positive development. He said the progress could help restore stability in the Middle East and contribute positively to the global economy.
Trump also pointed to recent declines in oil prices and rising trends in global stock markets as signs of improving stability, suggesting that a potential agreement with Iran could mark an important step toward global peace.
However, prior to the Iran-related developments, differences had emerged between Washington and several European allies—including France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy—over U.S. military actions. Trump’s remarks on NATO and defense cooperation had also reportedly generated debate within the alliance.
While some European countries have expressed willingness to cooperate to ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, Trump suggested that the situation is now stabilizing and that extensive additional assistance may not be necessary.
Following relative stabilization in the Middle East, the U.S. president indicated that attention would now shift toward ending the war in Ukraine. He said he had recently held separate discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, both of whom reportedly expressed openness to peace efforts.
The G7 Summit, which runs through Wednesday, is also expected to address global economic issues, the use of artificial intelligence, supply chain resilience, and the strategic minerals market.
