Russia Announces Temporary Ceasefire in Ukraine Ahead of WWII Victory Anniversary

Russia has announced a temporary ceasefire in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine to mark the anniversary of victory in World War II.According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, the 48-hour ceasefire will take effect on May 8 and 9, Al Jazeera reported.

Moscow stated that Russia traditionally commemorates Victory Day during this period each year with large-scale military parades and national events in the capital. The temporary truce has been declared in connection with those observances.

Ukraine, however, has not yet issued an official response to the announcement.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on social media that Kyiv has so far received no formal request regarding the proposed ceasefire.

He also stressed that human lives are more valuable than any celebration and said the time has come for Russia’s leadership to take concrete steps toward ending the war.

Analysts say the announcement comes amid continued international efforts to reduce tensions and explore diplomatic avenues for resolving the prolonged conflict.
