Washington Caught in Dilemma Over Iran’s New Diplomatic Proposal

Iran has reportedly submitted a new diplomatic proposal to the United States aimed at easing regional tensions, suggesting that nuclear negotiations be temporarily set aside in favor of ensuring safe maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and ending ongoing hostilities. According to sources familiar with the matter, the proposal has already reached Washington. At present, diplomatic communication between Iran and the United States remains largely stalled. Internal disagreements within Iran over its nuclear program have further complicated its negotiating position, prompting Tehran to explore alternative pathways toward a rapid settlement, analysts say.

However, the initiative has created a new dilemma for Washington. Easing sanctions or reducing pressure could potentially weaken the U.S. leverage in restricting Iran’s nuclear activities in the future. Washington has long prioritized curbing uranium enrichment and ensuring the removal of enriched nuclear material from Iran’s stockpile. According to White House sources, President Donald Trump is expected to convene a high-level meeting with senior national security and foreign policy officials to review the Iran situation.

The discussions are likely to focus on the current diplomatic deadlock, possible strategic responses, and the future direction of peace negotiations. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has shown no indication of softening its stance.

In recent remarks, the president reiterated support for maintaining naval restrictions, expressing confidence that sustained pressure would eventually compel Tehran to reach an agreement. Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, no tangible progress has been achieved so far. Iran’s recent engagement, including talks held during a visit to Pakistan, ended without significant breakthroughs, further deepening uncertainty over the future of negotiations.
